Everest Base Camp is surely the most iconic destination for walkers. It has been the launchpad for so many expeditions to the top of the world for many decades. For us, it is our high point and a just reward for our efforts in achieving our goal. The scenery is of such incredible beauty and on such a grand scale that it will live in your memory – and heart – forever.
Our Everest Base Camp trek starts in Kathmandu with time for sightseeing and soaking in the orderly chaos of the Thamel shopping district. We then fly to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region and from there start our trek through awe-inspiring mountain scenery. We stay in basic tea houses along the way in some stunning locations. We will be surrounded by the amazing sights of this region from sheer mountain faces to rushing ice water rivers and everything in between. Prepare to be impressed by the utter beauty of it all. Itinerary (subject to change)
Day 1 Depart UK for overnight flight to Kathmandu
Day 2 Arrival at Kathmandu and transfer to the hotel.
Day 3 Half day sightseeing and preparation for the trek.
Day 4 Kathmandu to Lukla flight and walk to Phakding. Altitude:2,800m/9,184ft(Lukla )&2,652m/8,692ft(Phakding) Walking Distance:8km (3-4 hrs) Flight Duration: Approximately 35 min
After a short morning flight to Lukla, you will be introduced to your porters. Your trek will start with an easy walk through Chaurikharka village and descent towards Dudhkoshi Ghat(2,530m/8,300ft).The trail follows the bank of the Dudhkoshi Riverto Phakding where we will be staying for the night to acclimatize. Enjoy some free time in Phakding, a popular stopping point.
Day 5 Phakding to Namche Bazaar.Altitude: 3,440m/11,283ft. Walking Distance: 10-12km. (5-6hrs)
We will have breakfast in Phakding before gearing up for the trek to Namche Bazaar,the biggest Sherpa village in Nepal. Our trail takes us first over the Dudhkoshi River via a long suspension bridge and then through a beautiful pine forest to Monjo, about two hrs away. Soon after, we will approach the entrance to Sagarmatha National Park for a brief permit check and then descend to Dudhkoshi River en route to Jorsale. Lunch will be served here, and then it’s uphill to Namche. It’s a tough climb to our resting place but you’ll be rewarded in Namche Bazaar with your first glimpse of Everest in all its glory.
Day 6 Namche Bazaar (REST DAY AND ACCLIMATION DAY)
At this point ,we will take a well –deserved break. There is an optional 2 hr hike to Everest view point, an uphill walk that will help speed acclimatization or you can explore Namche Bazaar. You can visit the Sherpa Museum where you can get an overview of the Sherpa culture and the history of mountaineering.
Day 7 Namche Bazaar to Tengboche. Altitude: 3,870m/12,684ft Walking Distance:10km(6hrs)
Breakfast in Namche Bazaar fuels us for another day of trekking towards Everest Base Camp .Breathtaking views of the Himalayas –Everest , Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam,Thamserku and Kwangde are some of the highlights not be missed. A short descent takes us to the riverside,then it’s across the river and upwards through the forest pass. Brace your legs for a continual uphill trek at this point, alternating between a gradual grade and some seriously steep ground. Our destination, Tengboche,is known as one of the most beautiful places in the Everest Region. Its view,which include Ama Dablam is legendary. We’ll stop in the Tengboche Monastery,which is one of the largest in Khumbu. Nourish your spirit with a guided tour of the monastery ground, followed by a chant and prayers with the resident Buddhist monks.
Day 8 Tengboche to Dingboche Altitude: 4,400m/14,435ft. Walking distance: 11km (6 hrs)
Our trek today kicks off with a walk through the rhododendron forest to Deboche followed by a bridge crossing over the raging Imja Khol River. We will pass the valley wall and then traverse the plains to Pangboche village, the biggest settlement of Sherpas in the region. Enjoy a great opportunity to observe a typical Sherpa village and have a lunch with the local people. The intrepid can brave a brief hike to the Pangboche monastery, one of the oldest in the area. Our afternoon trek will be a demanding one , as the landscape gives way to dry deserted mountains and we hike towards Dingboche.
Day 9 Dingboche to Lobuche Altitude: 4,900m/16,076ft Walking Distance: 11-12km(6-7hrs)
From here the trek will be gradually more challenging due to the higher altitude. We will pass Dungla but beforehand we have to hike a tough steep high hill. There are some memorial stupas here dedicated to the climbers and trekkers who have lost their lives to Everest over the years. The next part of our adventure brings craggy mountain terrain to Lobuche, a small settlement with amazing views of the Mt.Lobuchye, Mt Pumari and the Nuptse. Prepare to snuggle up for the cold night,as we are now almost three miles above sea level.
Day 10 Lobuche to Gorakshep and Everest Base Camp, Back to Lobuche Altitude: 5,180m/16,994ft (Gorekshep) & 5,364m/17,598(EBC) Walking Distance: 185km (8-9 hrs)
This is it. Our big day kicks off with the walk from Lobuche to Gorekshep. The subsequent straight trail to Everest Base Camp is harder, involving rocky dunes and moraine, formed by the accumulation of unconsolidated glacial debris. On the way to our destination, we will approach the famed Khumbu Glacier and icefall located on the slopes of Everest. Break out your cameras for unbelievable views of breathtaking beauty. As the afternoon sun starts to wane, we will head back to Lobuche for some rest and lunch at Gorakshep .
Day 11 Lobuche to Pangboche Altitude: 3,985m/13,074ft Walking Distance: 16km (5-6 hrs)
From Lobuche you will descend down to Pangboche while passing through more stunning panoramic mountain views. In Pangboche, you can visit the Pangboche Monastery – the oldest monastery in the Khumbu Region at over 300 yrs old. The trail today is nearly all downhill.
Day 12 Pangbonghe to Namche Bazaar Altitude: 3,440m/11,286ft Walking Distance: 12-13km(4-5hrs)
You will continue descending tody to Namche Bazaar. After spending the previous few days in the Upper Khumbu Region you can spend the afternoon relaxing and resting in Namche Bazaar.
Day 13 Namche Bazaar to Phakding Altitude: 2,652m/8,698ft (Phakding) Walking Distance: 5 hrs. Today we continue our descent, retracing our earlier steps with a totally differnt view ahead of us!
Day 14 Phakding to Lukla Altitude: 2,800m/9,184ft Walking distance: 4hrs. A shorter day today with rest time in Lukla ahead of our flight back to the capital.
Day 15 Lukla to Kathmandu Altitude: 1,350m/4,428ft Flight Duration: approximately 35 min
In the morning you will take the flight from Lukla to Kathmandu. You will be dropped at the hotel where you will have time to relax before dinner.
Day 16 Kathmandu A day to explore kathmandu at your leisure. You may choose to visit some of the historic sights or simply wander the shopping streets of Thamel. We will have a final dinner together to celebrate our trek to the top of the world -almost!
Day 17 Kathmandu
After breakfast you will be taken to the airport for your return flights.
Price includes: 15 nights bed and breakfast accommodation ( 4 nights twin ensuite / 11 nights shared rooms – twin wherever possible); internal flight to/from Lukla & all costs except international flight, visa, entrance fees to sites in Kathmandu, tips, lunch and evening meals – but these will be inexpensive.
