2019 Long Distance Hadrian’s Wall Trek

21st -30th Jun 2019 (Fri - Sun)
9 Nights Part Board - £1250

Walk the length of the wall with WalkingWomen

Walk the full Hadrian’s Wall National Trail – 84 miles from coast to coast – tracing 2,000 years of history across wild and beautiful countryside. The trek follows the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hadrian’s Wall, northern Europe’s largest surviving Roman monument. There will be regular sightings of the wall, along with viewings of milecastles, turrets and forts. All of this plus walking through the immensely varied scenery of the wild borderlands of northern Britain in the beautiful month of June.
We will walk west to east, keeping any westerly winds on our backs, and will stay in 3 centres. There will be 2 nights in the historic city of Carlisle in Cumbria with its Norman castle. This will be followed by 5 nights in a comfy hotel in the small Northumberland town of Haltwhistle with its pubs, cafes and small shops. We finish with 2 nights in the lively city of Newcastle upon Tyne with its historic quayside, bridges and museums.
Walking days will vary from 6 miles to 15 miles over the 8 walking days. The trek starts on the west coast on the salt marshes of the Solway Firth, then moves along the River Eden inland over gentle meadow land. The path then rises onto the rolling Northumberland hills with wide views and big skies, and we then find the most exciting sections of the Roman wall and other sites. Then it’s down through gentle meadows, to the River Tyne and into Newcastle along the early railway known as the Waggonway, now a green walkway into the heart of the city with its renovated river promenade and quayside. The final day of walking is then out along the River Tyne to Wallsend with its Segedunum fort and museum. There is no walk on the last day of the holiday although you may wish to take some time to explore Newcastle. This is a fabulous, physically demanding trek – we will be walking every day with an average daily mileage of 10 miles. All luggage is transported so you only need to carry a day pack.
