Our walks give us the chance to explore the history and culture as well as the truly magnificent scenery around us. Spring is the perfect time for us to enjoy the host of wild flowers that abound here. The walks range in length and are in the Intermediate category, with some climbs and more difficult terrain underfoot. Most of the routes follow old mule tracks “kalderimi” between villages and give us the chance to see truly unspoilt parts of the area. The descent of the spectacular Viros Gorge is a highlight of the week, along with swimming in secluded coves and glimpsing into beautiful frescoed churches. We will stop in village kafeneons for coffee, or sometimes lunch, and to watch the world go by. We will do 5 days walking with an optional excursion on the free day.
We stay at the fabulous Liakoto self-catering apartments which are spacious and have beautiful views. There’s a lovely pool for a post walk dip too. Breakfasts are varied and a real treat with local honey and yoghurt on offer. Lunch is not included – there is a small supermarket and some independent shops to buy supplies – and you have a fridge to store things which makes it easy. Dinners are organised by your guide each evening (excluding the free day) and are inexpensive set menus (not included).
Price includes: 7 nights B&B in twin ensuite rooms (single rooms may be available if you book early – supplement £15 per night; airport transfer from Kalamata at certain times; transport to walks
Not included: flight to Kalamata, lunch and dinner
Itinerary (subject to change)
Saturday: Arrive at Kalamata airport where you will be met by your guide. From here we travel by taxi to Kardamili (1 hour). Before dinner we will have a holiday briefing followed by a village stroll and evening meal together.
Sunday: After breakfast in the hotel on the beautiful seaside terrace we meet up to start our walking week proper. From Kardamili we walk up through the village of Petrovouni and climb on up to Nikova, Exochori (450m). In this unspoilt village we stop for coffee in the traditional Kafeneon before heading south towards Saidona. Crossing a small gorge, we pass beneath Saidona where we have a picnic lunch. After lunch we descend to Proastia and on to finish at the sea at lovely Kalamitsi Bay. In the evening we will again gather to eat in one of the village restaurants.
Monday: A spectacular day, taking us from sea level up to 500m and back again. We ascend on the old cobbled pathways through the village of Agia Sofia up to Chora where we will have coffee overlooking the Viros Gorge. Thus fortified we descend to the gorge floor and the deserted monastery of Agios Sotiris. After a deserved rest we walk follow the dry river bed to return to Kardamili.
Tuesday: Today we take a private bus to the village of Sotirianika to start our walk. This ancient route takes us through the farming area and across the Rhindomo gorge before reaching the small town of Kambos. Passing an ancient Tholos tomb we then climb up to Zarnata Castle high above the plain. From this point we head towards the sea and then take the long and winding kalderimi (cobbled path) back to finish on Ritsa Beach in Kardamili.
Wednesday: This is your free day. There are a number of options available (e.g. excursion, Try Dive, massage) as well as just relaxing by the pool or on the beach. We will have plenty of time to talk about your plans in the days before.
Thursday: For the last two days we are heading south, and today’s walk begins near Kivelia, a tiny hamlet of just 20 people. From here we walk on to the beautiful mountain village of Milea and enjoy a late breakfast/early lunch at the taverna in the square. Continuing on we pass through the timeless villages of Kato Chora, Eleochori, and Riglia, before reaching the sea at Agios Nikolaos fishing village.
Friday: Heading further south towards the deep Mani, we begin our walk in Thalames at 300m above sea level. We maintain our height as we walk through olive groves along to Platsa for coffee, before heading down to the sea through Kotroni to the tiny fishing village of Agios Dimitrious. Now at sea level, we follow the shore along to the small resort of Stoupa.
Saturday: Free morning in Kardamili before heading to the airport for return flights.
