The High Tatras mountains are among the most rugged and spectacular in Europe, part of the granite Carpathian Range, rising to almost 2500m. The dramatic scenery, combined with a sophisticated network of footpaths, makes Poland a popular walking destination amongst the Polish people, but we rarely encounter foreigners. We trek through valleys, past lakes and over ridges as we straddle the border of Poland and Slovakia. The walking is demanding but rewarding, the terrain tough but beautiful, and the mountain huts we stay in for 2 nights are basic but friendly, clean and hospitable, and serve delicious, freshly prepared traditional food; the “Pierogis” (savoury dumplings) are tastier than those served in Zakopane! The two nights enable us to stay in the High Tatras, and nestle in the spectacular “Valley of the Five Polish Lakes” for a night, before climbing up and over to descend into Moski Oko, the busy, and justifiably so, jewel in the crown of the Tatras. We will also scale “Geiwont” the classic peak that overlooks the city below. The last 100 metres is a steep climb, and involves using chains, but this is optional, as you can wait on the ridge and soak up the incredible views!
The National Park is a pristine area with abundant wild flowers and animals. On the higher ground these include marmot, lynx and eagles, as well as the 60 or so bears that roam the park. They generally feed on berries, seeds and grasses and keep away from humans! The trip includes one free day when you can simply relax or perhaps take a trip out. Zakopane has great shopping, museums, and it’s a 20 minute taxi ride to luxurious hot springs. We are only 2 hours away from the delights of Krakow, Poland’s most fascinating city. It is possible to visit the UNESCO salt mines and/ or the Auschwitz museum. Your guide will help organise these optional tours. Please note that the 2 nights in refuges are subject to availability. If there is no availability we will remain at the hotel throughout at no extra cost!
