Great Guides – a focus on Anita

Priorat,Spain

WalkingWomen has a network of women guides

And it’s what makes our holidays so special. They are the heart and the soul of WalkingWomen and each one has their own unique way of guiding you to discover and explore a new area. They all share their passion for ‘ their place”.

It might be sharing the tales of Nan Shepherd in the Cairngorms, Scotland or sharing the myths and legends of Secret Snowdonia, Wales or perhaps helping you spot a curlew or a mountain goat. We have over 25 women guides, and a growing network, to help you uncover new places and experiences and help you to walk, connect and revive. Together.

Over the next few months we will highlight our guides and what they are up to.

We hope you will meet them soon.

Norway

We start with Anita as we want to celebrate and congratulate her

on passing her BASI ( British Association of Ski Instructors ) Nordic Level 2 – a tough qualification to get and Anita got it !

We first met Anita guiding cross country in Norway and this remains a real passion of hers. Anita guides our Norway Cross Country Skiing Trips and our Secret Snowdonia holidays ( her homeland)

In Norway Anita introduces women to this wonderful sport and helps them get better and better and move on to the Peer Gynt Trail if they feel ready. This year we have an enthusiastic group all ready to book and we will set off in March 2025 with Anita and Wenke, our local Norwegian Guide. Still places if you are interested in registering  Peer Gynt Trail – register here

If you haven’t seen Anita in action do watch this video – great training to music!

Anita shares her experience of gaining her qualification …

Snow sports are sports for all – you’re not too old to stop skiing, you get old when you stop ! I developed my passion for Nordic Skiing in my 60s and I’m not stopping!

I finally passed my BASI ( British Association of Ski Instructors ) Nordic Level 2 this February in Chamonix. I was living in my campervan to be able to afford to train, although I did go straight to the supermarche, to buy a bottle of champagne on receiving the news of my attainment!  It was my third attempt to pass on the technical reassessment, although I passed the teaching assessment first time around, in 2022. The technical standard is very exacting, requiring precise demonstration of both disciplines of classic and skating techniques.  I have arthritis in my left ankle ( a consequence from a snowboard accident in my ‘ youth’!) which limits my forward bend, so following a year of training and physio, I was able to pass, and attain my licence.

My licence, combined with my BAIML ( British Association of International Mountain Leaders) qualifies me to guide on and off track for Walking Women in Norway.

We work in partnership with 2 of the best centres of excellence around Oslo, to provide unforgettable holidays, and are developing point to point tours, for second and third time rounders, who want to have bigger adventures. Yes, third even fourth time rounders!

Norway is the place you just want to keep coming back to, and the fully inclusive holidays are amazing value! Hope to see you in Norway 2025!
