The Dalmatian island of Brac lies off the coast from Split, threaded by lovely old mule tracks through olive groves and pinewoods. Ancient chapels and monasteries dot the island while along the rocky coast there are pebbly coves that invite a swim and small picturesque fishing resorts. Sutivan is one of these – built of famous Brac stone, and at night you can see the lights of Split across the water. Sutivan has no hotels, so we’ll do as the Croatians do and stay in small apartments, all within walking distance of Pension Dora whose vine covered courtyard and restaurant/bar we will use as our focal point. Here we will share breakfasts, and meals on 4 evenings. On the 3 other evenings we’ll eat out at seafront restaurants in smaller groups (these 3 meals are not included – from £10). The apartments are simple and typically Croatian, mostly with ensuite single rooms, and some with 2 single rooms sharing a bathroom and a small kitchen.
Besides our walking days, we will also take a day off to enjoy the sea, hire a bike or sea kayak, visit Diocletian’s Palace in Split, or simply relax with a book!
Price includes: 7 nights in ensuite twins (full board except for 3 eve. meals); transfer & all walks transport. Flight to Split is not included. Single rooms from £5 per night – book early!
Itinerary (please note that the itinerary is subject to change)
Day 1 Arrival at Split airport and transfer to the hotel by bus and ferry. Time to relax and settle in before meeting your guides for a holiday briefing and dinner.
Day 2 Today’s walk begins inland amidst the fertile landscape of the interior, where we descend towards the enticing turquoise seas of the coast at Supetar. We walk along wide tracks and down narrow stony paths beside fig trees and olive groves with amazing views across the sea and to the mainland until we reach the outskirts of the oldest inhabited village on the island, Skrip. After a short break (with a toilet and fresh water tap), we continue along the road into the historic village with its ancient buildings, including the island’s museum. We take time to visit the museum which houses Roman remains as well as the more recent cultural heritage of island life. We then have a relaxing lunch in the shade of the nearby church. Our walk continues along pretty tracks to the sea at the little harbour of Splitksa where we can take a welcome swim and perhaps have a cold drink before being collected by the minibus. 6 miles, around 75m ascent and 200m descent.
Day 3 Starting from Sutivan, a village with a distinctly Mediterranean feel in the northwest , we walk up to the old church. We then head up along a gently inclining track through olive fields with stunning views of the neighbouring islands up ahead. The track dips and then after a short ascent we walk along a beautiful little path with ancient stone walls and fields with goats grazing on either side. Turning north we soon descend to the sea and walk around a small inlet before arriving at Bobovisca. After lunch and a leisurely swim, we walk to Lozisca, a tiny village on the hillside with extensive views of the sea beyond. After taking in the views, we walk down through the surrounding countryside. We soon cross a small ravine via the ‘Kings Bridge’ and then follow paths through the Mediterranean wild scrub and small olive groves back to Sutivan. 9 miles, Gentle – 5 miles, around 150 metres ascent.
Day 4 Today we travel by bus to Podgazul, an old shepherds’ settlement high up on the island, and after exploring the ramshackle collection of shepherds’ huts, set off to walk through the mountain forest of low pine trees and scrub, along an earth track, before walking gradually up to the island’s highest point, Vidova gora, which offers spectacular views. After lunch,we follow the line of the cliff and then down, at times steeply, to arrive at Bol, the oldest town on the coast of Brac with its fantastic beach. Here we will reward ourselves with a cold beer and/or ice cream before our bus journey back. 7 miles, 800 metres descent, around 200m ascent
Day 5 Free day. The guide can advise on a range of optional activities including cycling, kayaking, visits to other villages on Brac, or a trip to Split to see Diocletian’s Palace. Or you may choose to simply relax on the beach with a good book and swim in the sea!
Day 6 For today’s walk, we travel in the mini bus towards the southern side of the island. We are dropped off near Drage vode and walk for about an hour until we reach the top of the path down to the monastery. We follow this rocky path down through a wide gorge until reaching the beautiful 15th century monastery where we hope to join a guided tour. After the visit, we continue down the pretty gorge to a little cove. We may stop here or walk round the headland to another beautiful cove to swim and have lunch. Walking back to the first cove we meet our boat to take us along the coastline for about 45 mins to Bol, where we will have a short visit before the minibus comes to collect us. Low intermediate – 5-6 miles, around 300 metres descent.
Day 7 Today we are taken by bus to a drop off point just outside Supertar and walk inland on little paths beside fields and alongside sea inlets before joining the coastal path proper at Splitska. We then continue along the coast to reach the sandy coastal bay at Lovrecina. There will be time for a swim and ice creams before our return journey home in the minibus. Low intermediate – 7 miles
Day 8 Return to Split airport for the journey home.
