Llangollen, set on the river Dee and surrounded by enticing hills, is a fascinating base for our Welsh walking holiday. Its history dates back to the 7th century when it was founded by Saint Collen. From then it has been associated with Arthurian legend, transformed by the Industrial Revolution and renowned both as the home of the ”Ladies of Llangollen” and the venue for the annual Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod. And then of course there is the walking – Llangollen is a stunning and often overlooked area of North East Wales where we find beautiful hillsides dotted with spectacular outcrops of Carboniferous limestone. From the tops there are far reaching views to the Shropshire and Cheshire plains beyond. Our walks may take in the Panorama and World’s End walks– stunning views and interesting industrial heritage can be enjoyed in abundance! We may also head to the Berwyn mountains immediately south of the town to enjoy magnificent views. A section of Offa’s Dyke is also a possibility as it passes nearby following the earthwork which roughly runs along the English / Welsh border. We will be based at the Hand Hotel, standing above a beautiful stretch of the River Dee with a relaxing riverside garden, it has been a hotel for 400 years and exudes old world charm with modern touches!
