Dublin is known for its culture, friendly people, music, literature and heritage – as well as being the home of Guinness! The city is situated within easy reach of dramatic coastal cliff walks and enchanting mountain scenery and we will take the opportunity to take in this bigger picture. We will be staying at Dublin City University Campus within easy reach of the centre by bus.
We will take time to explore the city of Dublin by day and night, visiting its many historic locations and its lively streets. In order to quickly get to the heart of the city, we will take a city tour with a local guide. There will be time during the holiday to explore independently and perhaps visit a museum or gallery of your choice.
During our stay we will head into the nearby Dublin Mountains and take in a section of the Dublin Mountains Way, one of the 1,001 most scenic walks in the world. The walk will take us through woodland and countryside with stunning views over the bay and the city of Dublin. We will start the walk at Shankill village and take in a number of historical sites of interest including the old lead mines tower and a megalithic standing stone.
On another day, we will head to the coast and the fishing village of Howth at the northern edge of Dublin Bay. The coastline here is beautiful and dominated by Howth lighthouse. We will perhaps walk along the pier and the cliffs beyond which skirt the rugged coastline. If we’re lucky we may spot a seal following the returning fishing boats. We will certainly make time for fish and chips too.
Another coastal walk will take us to Malahide, a village where the medieval and modern mix. We may take time to visit the castle (not included 12e) and explore the many shops. We could then take a walk along the coast to the neighbouring village of Portmarnock. The two villages are linked by The Velvet Strand, a 5 mile stretch of sandy beach.
In the evenings we will head into the city to eat in some of the many local restaurants and bars and perhaps go in search of some traditional local music.
