1-6 June 2013 (Sat-Thu) This holiday offers 5 days of Intermediate walks on the tranquil wilds of Exmoor – based in the seaside village of Porlock in Lorna Doone country.

Exmoor offers a wonderful variety of Intermediate walks with its changing landscape of dramatic coastline, open moorland, wooded combes, and hidden valleys. In June the moors will be vibrant with flowers and the sound of birds and insects, while autumn brings wonderful golden colour to Exmoor’s oak woodlands and you might hear the sound of stags locking their antlers. The two Intermediate walking holidays with Chrissie are based at the welcoming Overstream Hotel in Porlock. Porlock traces its origins back to the 12th Century – a charming village with narrow streets, many interesting shops, an ancient parish church, and some lovely thatched buildings. From here we can walk across Porlock Bay and up onto the moors, taking the SW Coast Path to the top of Bossington Hill and beyond. For another walk we can follow the coast more closely to look down over wooded combes to the sea. In the other direction we can walk along another beautiful stretch of coast via tiny Culbone Church, while inland there are circular walks onto the moors – up steep sided Dunkery Hill for fabulous views from Dunkery Beacon, or via Horner Wood up to Nutscale reservoir. In the evening we’ll eat out at local pubs and restaurants (not included, from £12).

Taunton is the nearest station with a frequent fast direct service from London & Birmingham, with good Advance ticket prices. We will arrange a 4pm shared taxi from the station (or a lift by Chrissie depending on numbers).

More details coming soon – this holiday is expected to take place in September 2011

Taking up the challenge of walking with wild swimming in Exmoor wasn’t that difficult for Catherine, our leader on this short break. Exploring the coastline and moors of the North Exmoor between Porlock and Lynmouth will provide good early autumn opportunities for dips and dives into pools of the grand rivers in this area. We wonder if Lorna Doone enjoyed the freshwater delights of Badgeworthy Water or East Lyn River? If not she missed a treat. Whether trying this for the first time or joining the group with a practiced eye, you’ll feel the therapeutic value of the silky waters through to the core of your being. And that is addition to the general well being from the fine walking over moors, along valleys and around the coastline cliffs. Of course it could all be rewarded with the excellent Cream teas and Hot chocolates of ideally situated refreshment stops.
