Last year saw our first Gentle Tuscany holiday take place in the Garfagnana Valley, edged by the splendid Alpi Apuane and Apennine mountains. The mixture of unspoilt hilltop villages and higher mountain tracks made for a varied experience. A trip to Barga, noted for its arts (& Scottish connections), was a highlight as was the optional day trip to the walled city of Lucca.
If you have met me or spoken to me in the office, you will know I enthuse about this location as my second home so I thought I would seek an objective opinion from one of the women who came along (and is returning to Tuscany this year):
“This place is absolutely wonderful!”, said Sue. “Charming accommodation, splendid pool and lovely meals – taken outside in the evenings, watching the fireflies dance. We walked in the most gorgeous landscapes with fabulous views – and excellent guiding, of course. But one thrilling aspect of spring was the abundance of wild flowers, which were almost as riveting to me as the walk routes. I’m taking a flower guidebook next time – just to make sure it really was a Butterfly Orchid I saw!”
Our base for the holiday is Casine di Braccicorti, a series of small villas plus a larger house where we enjoy the home cooked food and local wine. We aim to eat outdoors on the terrace with the Alpi Apuane as our backdrop. As the accommodation is set in extensive grounds, it is the perfect place for relaxing. The pool is always a tempting option if you feel energetic after the walks!
The walking is varied- woodland, meadows, villages, mountains - and although there are some ups involved they are taken at a steady pace – and worth the effort for the views!
If you are interested in joining the holiday this year then please get in touch. It is a truly magical place.
