15-17 June 2012 (Fri-Sun) A totally new holiday with where feasting is as important as walking. Learn what edible plants lie at your feet. Jane, a Leiths qualified chef, will lead you on 2 beginner-level forays near Castleton in the Derbyshire Peak District and help you forage for the many green edible plants surrounding you. In the evenings we will indulge in tailor-made meals, negotiated with local chefs, which emphasise locally produced and/or sourced ingredients. 2 nights full board, staying at the very comfortable Swiss House in Castleton. .
Fuller detail
Castleton lies at the foot of Peveril Castle, originally built in 1080 and is surrounded by old lead and fluorspar (including Blue John) caves and mines. The town sits on the border between the limestone White Peak and gritstone Dark Peak. Thus we will find a wide variety of edible plants growing native to the different types of geology. The walks are deliberately kept short in distance, 5 miles or less, so that we have plenty of time to stop, examine and nibble the weeds! As for feasting, Jane will share some recipe ideas for including edible plants. In the evenings we will indulge in tailor-made meals, negotiated with local chefs, which emphasise locally produced and/or sourced ingredients. Accommodation is in the very comfortable Swiss House in Castleton. Indulge yourself on this weekend with relaxed, beautiful walks, delicious food and comfortable accommodation! (You may want to bring a notepad and pen to jot down your observations and camera to photograph the plants identified.)
